Motorcycles are dangerous. They kill and maim riders and passengers every day. Many of these accidents are not the fault of the rider but of drivers who are not aware of the presence of a motorcycle. Dark paint jobs and black clothing may be stylish, but bright colors are much more visible. Anything you can do to be seen by drivers will serve you well. That includes staying out of a driver’s blind spots and not riding where you should not, like between lanes or in the bike lane.
Clothing is important for other reasons as well. Falling off a motorcycle can be a painful experience. Heavy clothing is necessary to avoid road rash. Leather pants or chaps, a leather jacket and leather gloves are preferred, and while it may get hot, it will be worth it in the end.
Make sure your bike is in good running order. Repairing your Harley on the side of the interstate is not safe. Be sure nothing is loose or hanging off your bike, including your chain; anything unexpected has the potential for an accident.
Do not follow cars too closely. They can stop much faster than you can. Pay attention at all times; do not look around for too long, you may regret it. In addition, never, ever, get on a bike under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Keep it within the speed limit and between the lines. Enjoy your ride and stay safe.
