Many would say that riding a Harley can certainly make someone look "cool." Some of may stem from the fact that famous actors who are considered "cool" have owned them; some examples being Elvis Presley, James Dean, Steve McQueen, Dennis Hopper, Evil Knievel, Peter Fonda and Don Johnson.

Having a custom-built Harley seems to be very popular among enthusiasts these days. A certain joy comes from knowing your Harley is unique and different from anyone else's bike. Some of these custom parts are strictly for more comfort, while other custom parts are more about achieving a unique appearance. At any rate, the real advantage to having a custom hog is the ability to make sure that the bike represents your own personality. This alone is often what entices people to customizing their bikes. There are a vast array of websites on the Internet that advertise custom parts for Harley-Davidson motorcycles. You can get a unique frame, chrome, paint job, custom made seats, tires, lights and mirrors. Any accessory an owner changes or adds to their bike will make it more unique.

There have been some famous custom Harleys. One of them, a 1949 CZ Harley, was made famous by James Dean. Even though Dean died at age 24, he had a large impact on youth culture during his short acting career. There is a famous photograph of Dean leaning against a Harley with a cigarette in his mouth, which is still a popular image today. Another famous custom Harley was owned by Evil Knievel. It was a 1972 XR750 Harley. It sported an aluminum alloy instead of an iron barrel, a change implemented in order to make the bike lighter for his jumps.
