In the year 1903, the Harley Davidson Corporation had manufactured three different kinds of motorcycles. The motorcycles had an atmospheric-inlet-valve single engine motor that they ran with. This engine was a 25 cubic inch engine.
The first police motorcycle was sold in 1907 and was a prototype V-twin motorcycle. Production was only 150 motorcycles for the entire year. In 1909 there were at least 1,100 plus motorcycles made, and they now had a 45 degree V-twin engine in them that ran on 7 horse power.
The first motorcycle with a clutch was made in the year 1912. By 1914, they were produced with an internal expanding rear brake on the motorcycle. When the 1915 models were designed, they were made with a three speed transmission. Finally, the front brake was introduced, which gave the motorcycles another upgrade for safety in keeping control.
Now in 1978 the very first electronic ignition was introduced. By this time, five speed transmissions were being made, along with some other great features. The rubber engine mount and an oil bath enclosed rear chain were all part of the 1980 changes. The sports hugger was the women’s bike of 1988 because the seat adjustment was made at 26 inches.
Into the 1990s, there have been some added features as well. In 1992 the first belt drive was put into the motorcycles. Harley finally came out with their fuel injected models in 1995.
Even as recently as this decade, and there have been some other changes to Harley Davidson's bikes, like the all new 88B twin cam engine with internal counterbalances. The 2009 bikes have an all new exhaust system on them.
